Susan's Story: A Journey of Sadness and Hope

On the 8th of May 2026 as a Charity we had planned a outreach at Kiwoko school of nursing and midwifery to give out bags to the mothers in the wards and it was here that we came across this brave mum Susan, let me share here and hope this has an impact on your life

Susan was a mother who gave birth in December 2025 to a beautiful baby boy at Kiwoko Hospital. By May 2026, she found herself still in the hospital and facing overwhelming challenges due to unpaid hospital bills this is the norm for many mothers and families in Uganda

Susan's journey is marked by both sadness and the joy of hope. After the birth her partner unexpectedly left her, leaving Susan to navigate this difficult time alone. In a shocking turn of events, we found that he even went so far as to ask the hospital to end the lives of both Susan and her newborn baby. Imagine the depths of no hope to be able to pay for something that it leads to that. Despite these heart-wrenching circumstances, Susan remained resilient.

I love how her story isn't just about struggle; it is also about the strength of a mother’s love and the hope for a better future. As she continued to fight for her and her baby's life, Susan became a symbol of perseverance in the face of adversity. With every passing day, she held onto the hope that brighter days were ahead, determined to provide a loving home for her child. I found out that whilst trying to come to terms with being alone in hospital and an unsurmountable bill to pay she was serving others in the hospital. She would wash the clothes of other mums and gain little money for it to try and chip away at the bill however this was never going to be enough.

This is where we stepped in and certain supporters of Leah Charity Foundation from Scotland AKA my mum and dad and sister and brother in law managed to pay the entire hospital bill this gave Susan the hope that she needed. We as a charity also provided Susan and her child with the basic things she needed from a mattress, baby nappies, mosquito net to food. For me this was a real eye opener of the outreach at Kiwoko hospital to see the struggle of a young mum but it also shows the impact we can have to so many lives and how God can use people to help those in need
